Since I BC on new yrs,I state that I transitioned for 2 yrs so ppl don’t think I grew this in 2 wks
Congrats on your BC! I always mentioned the fact that I had hair when I started out. I didn’t want them to think I grew all of that hair in a short space of time.
Since I stopped relaxing my hair, other women that I work with stopped relaxing their hair also. Some did the big chop after a month of growing their hair and others transitioned for two years before making the plunge. Yesterday I waked into a conversation about ‘How long have you been natural?’ and it was a big debate on how you answer that question.
Whenever anyone asks me how long I have been natural I tell them one of two things. I either tell them when I stopped relaxing my hair OR I tell them when I cut off my straight ends and I tell them how much hair I started out with. Why? Because I find it confuses people. Like my one of my coworkers tells people she has been natural for one year BUT she has over 10 inches of hair. So people say to her ‘You grew all that hair in a year?’, when in fact she transitioned for one year.
So to avoid the confusion, I say I BC’d on 20th May 2011 and I had roughly two inches of hair at that time. So at least they don’t think I grew my hair from a bald head. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter to some people how you answer, but to others it does.
The whole discussion at my job started because someone asked my coworker (who just cut off her ends this past Saturday after two years of transitioning) how long she has been natural and she said three days. Now my coworker has about nine inches of hair, so the person that asked her the question was confused. That is why I answer the way I do.
How do you girls answer that question?
Who am I fooling? Every year I promise to do things that I know I am never going to do so why bother? I promised myself that in 2013 I was going to comb my hair more and try new styles, and I failed at that miserably. So this year I am not going to make any hair promises to myself. I am just going to keep doing what I do and make changes wherever I see necessary.
I am hoping to continue to retain my length, I feel that I have been doing very well at this. Most of the naturals around me said they have reached their ‘plateau’ with hair growth but I find my hair still continues to grow, I just think it grows very SLOWLY.
Oh! Let me not forget to mention that I am four months away from my three year mark! I am so excited about that. I love comparing where I came from to where I am now.
Anyway I just wanted to check in since I haven’t been here in a while.
